A big day for Kawasaki Frontale who can go top of the table with all three points and put them in a strong position to claim a third straight title. They are a long way off the form of the last two seasons, but as I have been saying regularly in recent weeks, it is "in there somewhere" and they are finally building up a head of steam and finding a way to win. At the weekend they edged past 4th placed Kashima Antlers and I wrote ..............
Kawasaki Frontale went to Avispa Fukuoka last weekend and I noted ...........
Avispa's last two league starts have seen them lose 2-0 to two top teams on the road, Cerezo and Antlers, they meet another today in Frontale , albeit at home and facing a team who have fallen on hard times (it is all relative). After running away with back to back titles and setting record after record in J-League and then, smashing them again, 6th place this morning must feel almost like a relegation battle to Kawasaki. However, they are edging closer to the top and a win over leaders Marinos last week, regardless of how it came (100th minute winner!), was a confidence boost. They expected to challenge for four titles, now they only have the league to play for, but if they win their 2-3 games in hand, they will be no worse than second and no more than two points off first place. Their numbers are not terrible, only in comparison to 2020 and 2021 , but I doubt anyone will come close to those any time soon, if ever. Frontale simply have to find a way to win this. Their away xG of 1.61-1.1 is better than half a goal pg in their favour and in terms of xGA they are defensively the best road team in Japan . Avispa are the least potent, posing the lowest xGF of 0.96 and second lowest as a host ( 1.03).
Frontale won 4-1, the performance was not as impressive as the result sounds, but it is more about winning games now and with a confidence boosting run, surely the performances will kick in at some stage. Today they host what is probably their biggest rival, but Antlers are in poor form, have won just once in 7 starts and have been quite dire against top half of the table opposition, winning 3/12 (12 points total) and conceding 24 goals (2.0 pg) , which includes a 2-0 loss at home to Frontale early in the campaign. They have picked up 2.67 ppg and just conceded 8 goals total in games v bottom half of the table opponents and it is clear where their talents lie and it is as a flat track bully!
Frontale are unbeaten in 12 h2h meetings ( 9 wins) and have won the last four and also last four as host, we can expect those trends to continue.
They won 2-1 after racing into a two goal lead inside 15 minutes, that makes it sound like a struggle after that, but this time it wasn't really and they always felt in control and gave up few chances of note. Sagan are strong opponents and tough to beat, but draw FAR too many matches (13/26) and that prevents them getting into Champions League contention. They have taken four points from the last three h2h meetings, but really rode their luck right across all three and Frontale ought to gain a little revenge today with the greater motivation. Just three road defeats for Sagan this season, but all came by 2+ goals and the visitors have conceded 15 goals (18 BC's) in their last five road outings ( as many as they had allowed in the previous 15 away games) and we should favour Frontale to find a way.
