Ligue 2: Troyes- Le Havre

Troyes have served us well in early season, winning at Niort and playing their part in an "over" with Clermont last Friday ...............

I was big on the chances of Troyes last week for their trip to Niort..................

Troyes have so far retained Kévin Fortuné, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoann Touzghar who scored 36 goals between them last season (two more than the whole Niort squad managed) and the trio are all in the squad for today, despite interest in a couple and for big money in the case of Mbeumo. They also signed defensive midfielder Florian Tardieu from Zulte Waregem this week , he fits the Troyes profile of liking an experienced player ( see my notes from opening day last season at the foot of this email), he has played some 200 Ligue 2 games and goes straight into the squad today. They look to have upgraded in other defensive areas and should put in a big promotion push this season. In 2018-19 they finished third, but collected 5 points more than champions Metz and 4 more than second placed Brest from Matchday 6 onwards. Troyes won on opening day last year, but then lost their next five starts before things clicked, we can make a case,a  strong one, for them being the best L2 team over 32 games ( 84.2% of the season) and if they keep the trio, or at least two and possibly replace the other, they have to be amongst the title favourites.

Niort have finished 11-16-10-15-12 in the last five seasons, they have looked better than that at times, but always seem to flatter to deceive and end up in lower mid table. Last season they only scored 34 goals, better than just 5 teams and have lost top scorer Ande Dona Ndoh who notched 13 of those, collected just 15 points (league low) over the second half of the campaign and, beat only one non relegated team all season without a scoring contribution from Ndoh.

Obviously those notes also had an anti Niort basis , but Troyes did all that was required and won 2-0. They will be asked more questions today and did win on opening day 12 months ago, before losing their next five and that might be at the back of pre match thoughts today , but ESTAC look good and will surely challenge for the title.

I am a fan of how Clermont are run and pre season I wrote ............

We often speak of Clermont as overachieving year after year on a tiny budget in a rugby playing area, so their (budget)  increase of 1.9m which would not be worthy of much note elsewhere, could be important, it is an extra 28% and interesting to see what they can do with it, as every cent is spent wisely at this club.

They opened with a 3-0 win over a very physical Chateauroux team and new striker Adrian Grbic scored twice and looked deadly from long range set pieces, willing to shoot from 30m plus and this gives the team a whole new dimension. He was very complimentary about his team mates and the spirit at the club and for now, we can mark Clermont down as having "possibilities" and goals in them and they might catch a few teams out in early season. For today, I like both teams to score at least once and with Troyes still retaining their "Big 3" up top, goals in this.

Troyes lost that 2-1 , after leading for 34 minutes, three things to highlight from that, they had Dylan Chambost sent off late, he had replaced Bryan Mbeumo who has subsequently joined Brentford (sensible lad) in a big money move and he will be sampling the delights of Middlesbrough (there are none !) tomorrow, so an issue in that position. Also, Troyes have surely at least thought about last season when they won their opener and then lost five in a row, a sequence which ultimately cost them an automatic promotion spot and once any kind of negative thoughts get inside your head, they are extremely difficult to shift.

Le Havre have opened with two score draws, 1-1 at home to Niort and 2-2 away to Ajaccio, they have scored on their last four visits to Troyes, with the last three going "over" the 2.5 goal line, we could see goals this evening, but Troyes have not won in the last six starts in which Mbeumo played 30 minutes or less (losing 4) and failed to score in five and I have some concerns about them today. Le Havre do have a good recruitment team and the signing of Tino Kadewere from Djurgarden last season now looks super business, he made a slowish start to 18-19 but got injured shortly before/after his arrival, he has three goals in two starts this season and looks to be thriving as the main striker. He looks the real deal and Le Havre have goals in them, I have to admit that I have some issues with them defensively and if Mbeumo was still at Troyes I would love these odds on the "over", but see better value today with ..........
