Brazil: Serie A: Parana- Vitoria
Parana will soon be relegated, probably next weekend, they sit bottom of Serie A , 17 points from safety and 16 adrift of the team immediately above them, who is today's visitor, Vitoria. The host appear to have timidly accepted their fate and have lost their last four by a combined 13-1 we have opposed them for two of those and notes on both are included in the preview of their last home start, a visit from Flamengo...............

Flu won 4-0, Parana had zero big chances or attempts on target and just one from inside the penalty area, which makes for grim reading . They had to travel to Rio and back for that and now make the 2,500km trip up to Salvador to play Bahia, who sit in 14th, but only a point above the drop zone and with 3/4, including their next two on the road, the host will have long earmarked this for three points. Bahia have had two extra days recovery ahead of this and can take confidence from back to back draws with top 5 teams in Flamengo and Gremio (road) and they will certainly notice and welcome the drop in quality of opposition. Bahia have lost only twice at home, a few too many draws, but have been very focussed when they have had to win and they have beaten the other two bottom four teams they have hosted by a combined 6-1. My feeling is that after going ten rounds with Flu on Monday, most of it on the ropes. Parana might have little stomach for a fight like this and maybe, just maybe have accepted the inevitable. They are effectively 15 points from safety, with 30 still up for grabs, but they have to pick up a minimum six wins through 10 starts , having won just 3/28 all season.............ain't gonna happen !
They lost that 2-0 , that's no wins in 15 starts (11 losses) with just four goals scored and that makes for very dismall reading. I guess they have accepted the inevitable now and might relax and post another win or two before the season end, but hard to see it coming today. Flamengo are very talented and are third in the table, 4 points behind Palmeiras and one adrift of second placed Internacional, the top two are both at home this weekend, so Fla probably need to win to keep pace and their title hopes alive, especially with a home game against the leaders next weekend. Fla have kept three cleansheets and scored six in winning their last two, the most recent a 3-0 defeat of main rival Fluminense, which gives the direct form line with Parana (see above) a boost. The hosts have lost their last 8 starts versus top 9 teams by a combined 19-0 (!) with seven wins coming by 2+ goals.
Fla won that 3-0, Parana have subsequently lost 3-1 at Cruzeiro where they recorded zero attempts on target and only one from inside the penalty box (!) and, before someone asks, it was an own goal !
We do not get many road wins in Brazil, but there is no easier venue to come to and the number of away wins usually pick up in late season in Serie A. Parana have already lost 20 games, are going even backwards from that (last win was July 22nd) and they have scored just 13 goals this season, which is an average of 0.42 per game, making it tough to win and there it is, the stating the obvious comment of the weekend............I always like to have one !
So here it is , Vitoria have 7 games to pass three teams, they have seven of them within four points, the rest look safe, that septet are not going to win many on the road and today the visitors have a glorious opportunity to gain a march on the rest. Vitoria have played pretty well in their last three starts , picking up 4 points , it might have been more with a little luck in front of goal. They will get chances today, Parana don't score and have conceded in their last 17 starts , not a great combination !
Vitoria made the long trip down from Salvador early , leaving after training on Friday to give themselves as good a chance as possible, with a Saturday practice scheduled at the Curitiba facility.
