At the start of the Copa America I wrote .........
The tournament was originally scheduled to be jointly held in Argentina and Colombia, it was then switched to just Argentina and is now being held in Brazil having been moved just 12 days ago. The original change was for civic unrest issues, the second following a COVID surge in Argentina, so they decide to move it to a country with the second highest number of COVID deaths in the world and the third highest number of cases, all at the behest of Brazilian president and coronavirus denier Jair Bolsonaro. You could not make it up !
That is bad enough, but what about the format ! Two five team groups and twenty games to eliminate one team in each section, pointless games that no one needs at the end of a long season and which will only result in fixtures that teams might not want to win.
16 days and 20 games later Bolivia and Venezuela, teams that 90% of CONMEBOL watchers might have nominated as most likely to be heading home, have been eliminated. A totally pointless exercise and doubly so as it comes on the back of a very gruelling campiagn, ahead of which many players had their shortest ever pre season..............pure madness !
Now the competition can begin in earnest and the last eight in draw order looks a lot like this .............
Argentina-Ecuador
Uruguay- Colombia
Brazil - Chile
Peru- Paraguay
