I opposed Shimizu S-Pulse at home to Kashima Antlers last month when I highlighted just how poorly they had played against top 7 opposition ............
We opposed Shimizu for their last home game with Gamba Osaka which they lost 1-0 and had touched upon how poor they had been, albeit it in a 2-2 draw, against Marinos a few days earlier, giving up 27 attempts, 14 ITB, 9 on target, 11 corners and making 7 saves. That is of further interest as it is the only game in SSP's last six starts versus top 7 opponents in which they have scored and they hugely rode their luck in that !
I also put up some "in play" stats ..........
Antlers have a 9-4 away first half goal difference.
SSP are 0-6 (scored-conceded) at home after the 76th minute.
Antlers won 4-0 and led 2-0 at the half and SSP also kindly conceded twice after the 81st minute, the perfect game !
SSP have played two more top teams subsequently and did take a point, but struggle with this level of opposition and the three points are waiting for Vissel Kobe today.
The visitors are in pole position to claim third spot and that sole remaining Champions League place, they are three points off the pace in 4th, but with two games in hand and it is theirs to lose. I have spoken often about this being a well financed club with huge ambitions, beyond Japan and to become the biggest force in Asia and they have done everything possible to finish top 3 and serious questions will be asked if they do not now complete the job. They have won their last four starts against bottom 7 opposition and by a combined 13-3 . Away win !
