Welsh derby game which is being televised and will be very keenly fought, energy reserves are a little low for both and the visitors have been mindful that they have another match on Tuesday and have done very little training this week, just looking to keep things ticking over, since their 2-0 win over AFC Telford on New Year's Day. They lost vastly experienced striker Brett Ormerod (23 appearances-4 goals - 6 assists) with a groin injury early in the second half there and he will be out for a couple of weeks, he was replaced by right winger Adrian Cieslewicz (24-6-1), who scored the decisive second goal and with the Red Dragons short of strikers at the moment, he seems sure to start this evening.
The injury to Ormerod aside, there was plenty to like about the performance, they dominated the second half and could easily have scored a couple more and in addition, kept their first clean sheet since late September. It has not been that they were shipping goals, just making the odd error here and there, which always seemed to cost them a goal. The other goal was scored by Danny Wright, his third in three starts and they at least arrive with one fit and in form striker.
County were left stunned by a 5-0 home defeat to Forest Green Rovers, a team they had beaten in the reverse fixture just a couple of days earlier, you can see very extended highlights of the first match here LINK. They were fortunate to win that, FGR could have been a couple up even before they took the lead and had a lot of joy down both flanks in what was a very physical encounter. Captain and Right back/ midfielder David Pipe (22-0-2) missed the return , which compounded the problems out wide and is again a doubt for tonight and would be sorely missed, they lost both and conceded eight goals in the two matches he has missed.
Newport do pose a goal threat but are a bit of a mess defensively, with or without Pipe and have conceded 26 golas in their last ten starts, two or more in eight and look there for the taking at present. Forget the scoreline, it was the performance on NYD that was the more worrying and these are just some of the notes, from their own website match report and these are often written through rose tinted glasses.....
As bad days at the office go, this one was particularly horrific as an expectant bank holiday crowd watched in stunned disbelief at the carnage unfolding before them
shell-shocked boss Justin Edinburgh quickly admitted afterwards; “We didn’t see that coming, we’ve been properly beaten today; the players are devastated and embarrassed, we’re all embarrassed today.”
the Exiles simply fell apart and the final gulf between the teams could even have been greater truth be told.
Half-time: County 0 Forest Green 2
The general consensus during the half-time refreshment was that County simply couldn’t be that poor again; oh dear, how woefully misguided we were. The Exiles’ second-half showing was not only worse, it was the stuff of blood-curdling nightmares; indeed that dreadful first period had been vintage fodder by comparison.
The admirable spirit of Flynn was an isolated plus, amidst a team that now looked well and truly dejected;
“There’s not a great deal I can say really” explained Justin Edinburgh afterwards; “We’ve severely let ourselves down today. I’m not going to talk about individuals, we win and lose collectively; we’ve been beaten by a better side today and it’s not easy to take. We have to dust ourselves down and it’s how we respond now; we’ve overcome blows before. The goals we conceded were really poor goals, bad lapses of concentration, individual errors, we can’t keep needing three and four goals to win games.
Not a lot you can add to that, forget their highflying league position, defensively, County are not up to the task and need to get busy in the transfer market. Wrexham won the reverse fixture 2-0, it was a commanding performance and worth noting that the goals came via Cieslewicz and Wright, who will both have positive mental memories of that game. The visitors have not lost to County in five meetings in the last two years and only conceded a single goal, winner tonight will go top of the table, at least for 24 hours, a point will be enough for Wrexham and that is the minimum I see them collecting here. They are 43-15-13 in the Conference over the last season and a half, that is over two points per game and averages out to 93 over a full season, which would have seen them win the title in 2009 and finish second every year since, incredible consistency over a 17 month period and if there is any justice, they will be back in the Football League next season. 1.25 units Wrexham level ball 1.84 asian line/ Ibramarket.
Good Luck.
