It is just crazy how many "good teams" cannot defend, off the top of my head, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Villa in the EPL, maybe even Manchester City (if you can get the ball off them!) , definitely Manchester United , but they are not very good in any case! Bayern, Monaco, Milan, the list goes on, but it is more obvious in the Premier League where goals are circa 0.4-0.45 up compared to the last two seasons ( up well over 0.5 goals from 2020/21) and have risen (from an already high number) by 0.2 goals since Christmas. It makes for great viewing and is why television companies fall over themselves to pay the big bucks to show EPL football and the whole world watches. It shows no signs of abating and it makes for incredible entertainment, but I do wonder if defending is a dying art and "defenders" are often spoken highly of for what they bring to the offensive phase. No one wants a goalkeeper who doesn't have great distribution, a full back (is there such a thing any longer?) who doesn't have great pace and can cross a ball and assist, or central defender who cannot bring the ball out of defence and play a big part in offensive set plays (two Brentford central defenders had a combined 20 touches in the opposition box in a recent game). Long may it last!
